Analytical method for the determination of arsenic and its compounds

Translation of DGUV Information 213-503 (former BGI 505-03 or ZH1/120.3)

CAS Number: 7440-38-2

For volatile compounds such as arsenic trifluoride and arsenic trichloride, particulate samplers are not suitable for sampling.

Method 04 – GFAAS

Sampling is carried out with a pump and collection on a membrane filter. Analysis is performed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) after acid digestion.

This method permits the determination of the concentration of arsenic and its compounds at workplaces averaged over the sampling time.

Principle

A pump draws a defined volume of air through a membrane filter. The arsenic contained in the deposited aerosol is determined by means of atomic absorption spectrometry with the graphite furnace technique after acid digestion.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 0.15 ng of arsenic.

Relative: 0.25 µg/m3 for an air sample volume of 1.2 m3, sample solution of 20 mL (dilution factor 4) and an injection volume of 20 µL and 5 µL of matrix modifier.
