Analytical method for the determination of diethyl sulfate
Translation of DGUV Information 213-518 (former BGI 505-18 or ZH1/120.18)
CAS Number: 64-67-5
Synonyms:
- DES
- Sulfuric acid diethyl ester
Method 05 – GC/MS after thermal desorption – limited suitability: category E3
Sampling is carried out with a pump and adsorption on Tenax. Analysis is performed by gas chromatography with mass selective detection (GC/MS) after thermal desorption.
This method can be used with personal or stationary sampling to determine the mean concentration of diethyl sulfate at workplaces over the sampling time.
Principle
A pump draws a defined volume of air through a metal tube filled with Tenax. The adsorbed diethyl sulfate is then thermally desorbed and determined by gas chromatography.
Limit of quantification (LOQ)
Absolute: 78 ng of diethyl sulfate
Relative: 3 µg/m³ of diethyl sulfate for a 25 L air sample.
Issue
February 2007
The measuring method is of limited suitability (E3).
The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of diethyl sulfate (Air Monitoring Methods, Volume 12, 2011).
Method 04 – GC – limited suitability: category E3
Sampling with a pump, adsorption on Tenax-TA, desorption, gas chromatography and mass-selective detection
This method permits the determination of diethyl sulfate concentrations in working areas averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.
Principle
With a pump a measured air volume is drawn through a Tenax tube. The adsorbed diethyl sulfate is desorbed with toluene and analysed using a gas chromatograph with mass selective detector.
Limit of quantification (LOQ)
Absolute: 0,4 ng diethyl sulfate.
Relative: 0.01 mg/m3 diethyl sulfate for 20 L air sample, 1 mL of desorption solution and 2 µL injection volume.
Issue
April 1997
The measuring method is of limited suitability (E3).
The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of diethyl sulfate (Analyses of Hazardous Substances in Air, Volume 5, 2002).
