Analytical method for the determination of 2-nitronaphthalene

Translation of DGUV Information 213-522 (former BGI 505-22 or ZH1/120.22)

CAS Number: 581-89-5

Method 02 – HPLC – limited suitability: category E3

Sampling is carried out with a pump, the particulate fraction being collected on a glass fiber filter and the gaseous fraction adsorbed on a connected silica gel tube. Analysis is performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after desorption.

This method permits the determination of the 2-nitronaphthalene concentration at workplaces averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.

Principle

A pump draws a defined volume of air through a GSP sampling system equipped with a glass fiber filter and a silica gel tube. The collected 2-nitronaphthalene is desorbed with methanol and analysed by means of liquid chromatography.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 3 ng of 2-nitronaphthalene.

Relative: 3.8 µg/m3 of 2-nitronaphthalene for an air sample volume of 240 L, a sample solution of 3 mL and an injection volume of 10 µL.

Method 01 – GC – withdrawn

Sampling with a pump and adsorption on silica gel, gas chromatography after desorption.

This method permits the determination of the 2-nitronaphthalene concentration at workplaces averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.

Principle

With a pump a measured air volume is drawn through tubes filled with silica gel. The adsorbed 2-nitronaphthalene is then desorbed with methanol and determined by gas chromatography.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 2 ng of 2-nitronaphthalene.

Relative: 0.05 mg/m³ ≙ 0.007 ml/m³ (ppm) 2-nitronaphthalene for a 40-litre air sample.
