Method 01 – PHOT – limited suitability: category E1

Sampling with a pump and absorption in 4‐(4‐nitrobenzyl)‐pyridine solution, photometry after derivatisation.

This method permits the determination of dimethylcarbamoyl chloride concentrations in working areas averaged over the sampling time after stationary sampling.

Principle

With a pump a measured air volume is drawn through washing bottles containing a 1% solution of 4‐(4‐nitrobenzyl)‐pyridine in acetone (NBP solution). The absorbed dimethylcarbamoyl chloride reacts with NBP on heating to form N,N‐dimethyl‐4‐[(4‐nitrophenyl)‐methylene]‐1(4H)‐pyridine carboxamide. This derivative is determined by photometry.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 1.0 µg dimethylcarbamoyl chloride for 10 ml sample solution and 10 mm optical path length.

Relative: 0.05 mg/m³ = 0.01 ml/m³ (ppm) dimethylcarbamoyl chloride for a 20‐litre air sample.

Issue

The measuring method is of limited suitability (E1).

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of dimethylcarbamoyl chloride (Analyses of Hazardous Substances in the Air, Volume 7, 2003).
