Analytical method for the determination of 2,6-dinitrotoluene

Translation of DGUV Information 213-540 (former BGI 505-40 or ZH1/120.40)

CAS Number: 606-20-2

Method 01 – GC – limited suitability: category E2

Sampling with a pump and adsorption on silica gel. Gas chromatography after desorption.

This method permits the determination of 2,6-dinitrotoluene concentrations in working areas averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.

Principle

With a pump a measured air volume is drawn through a glass tube filled with silica gel. The adsorbed 2,6-dinitrotoluene is then desorbed with methanol and determined by gas chromatography.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 0.1 ng 2,6-dinitrotoluene.

Relative: 0.005 mg/m³ ≙ 0.0007 ml/m³ (ppm) 2,6-dinitrotoluene for a 20-litr air sample.

Issue

January 1989

The measuring method is of limited suitability (E2).

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of 2,6-dinitrotoluene (Air Monitoring Methods, Volume 7, 2003).
