Method 01 – HPLC
Sampling with a pump and adsorption on an impregnated filter, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after Desorption.
This method permits the determination of 1,2-phenylenediamine and 1,3-phenylenediamine concentrations in working areas averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.
Principle
With a pump a measured air volume is drawn through a glass fibre filter impregnated with hydrochloric acid as stipulated in the definition of inhalable dust fraction. The adsorbed 1,2-phenylenediamine and 1,3-phenylenediamine is desorbed with a mixture of acetonitrile and aqueous ammonia and analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
Limit of quantification (LOQ)
Absolute: 7.3 ng 1,2-phenylenediamine and 5.5 ng 1,3-phenylenediamine.
Relative: 0.006 mg/m3 1,2-phenylenediamine and 0.004 mg/m3 1,3-phenylenediamine for 500 L air sample, 5 mL desorbate (dilution in the ratio 1:1 v/v) and 25 µL injection volume.
