Method 02 – HPIC
Sampling with a pump and absorption in a sodium carbonate/sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, ion chromatography (HPIC) after elution.
This method permits the determination of sulfuric acid concentrations in working areas averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling. Sulfur trioxide is also detected under the sampling conditions described.
Principle
A pump is used to draw a measured volume of air through a washing bottle filled with sodium carbonate/sodium hydrogen carbonate solution. The absorbed sulfuric acid is determined by ion chromatography.
Limit of quantification (LOQ)
Absolute: 5 ng sulfuric acid.
Relative: 0.002 mg/m3 sulfuric acid for a 560 litre air sample volume, 10 mL absorbent volume and 50 µL injection volume.

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of sulfuric acid or oleum (Air Monitoring Methods, Volume 9, 2005b).
