Analytical method for the determination of chloroprene

Translation of DGUV Information 213-577 (former BGI 505-77)

CAS Number: 126-99-8

Synonym: 2-Chloro-1,3-butadiene

Method 01 – Headspace GC – limited suitability: category E2

Sampling is carried out with a pump and adsorption on charcoal. Analysis is performed by headspace gas chromatography after desorption.

This method permits the determination of the chloroprene concentration in the air at workplaces with personal or stationary sampling averaged over the sampling time.

Principle

A defined volume of air is drawn through a charcoal tube by a pump. The adsorbed chloroprene is desorbed with N,N-dimethylacetamide. The analysis is performed by means of headspace gas chromatography.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 9 µg of chloroprene per charcoal tube.

Relative: 3 mg/m3 of chloroprene for an air sample volume of 30 L, a sample solution of 3 mL and an injection time from the headspace of 0.12 min.

Issue

November 2009

The measuring method is of limited suitability (E2).

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of chloroprene (Air Monitoring Methods, 2013).
