Analytical method for the determination of nicotine in tobacco smoke in the ambient air

Translation of DGUV Information 213-578 (former BGI 505-78)

CAS Number: 54-11-5

Synonym: (S)-(-)-3-(1-Methylpyrrolidin-2-yl)pyridine

Method 02 – GC/MS – limited suitability: category E1/E3

Sampling is carried out with a pump and adsorption on XAD-4. Analysis is performed by gas chromatography after desorption.

This method determines the nicotine concentration due to exposure to tobacco smoke in the ambient air at the workplace, averaged over the sampling period with personal or stationary sampling.

Principle

A defined volume of air is drawn through an XAD-4 tube by a pump. Then the adsorbed nicotine is desorbed with a mixture of ethyl acetate and methanol, and analysed by gas chromatography.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 23 pg of nicotine.

Relative: 0.1 µg/m3 of nicotine for an air sample volume of 240 L, a sample solution of 1 mL, and an injection volume of 1 µL.

Issue

November 2009

The measuring method is of limited suitability (E1/E3).

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of nicotine in tobacco smoke in the ambient air (Air Monitoring Methods, 2013b).

Method 01 – GC/MS – limited suitability: category E1/E3

Sampling is carried out with a pump and adsorption on charcoal. Analysis is performed by gas chromatography with mass selective detection (GC-MS) after desorption.

This method determines the nicotine concentration due to exposure to tobacco smoke in the ambient air at the workplace, averaged over the sampling period with npersonal or stationary sampling.

Principle

A defined volume of air is drawn through a charcoal tube by a pump. Then the adsorbed nicotine is desorbed with a mixture of dichloromethane, carbon disulphide and methanol, and analysed by gas chromatography.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 45 pg of nicotine.

Relative: 0.002 mg/m3 of nicotine for an air sample volume of 60 L, a sample solution of 1 mL and an injection volume of 0.5 µL.

Issue

November 2009

The measuring method is of limited suitability (E1/E3).

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of nicotine in tobacco smoke in the ambient air (Air monitoring methods, 2013a).
