Method 01 – IR
Sampling is carried out using a pump and collection on a membrane filter. In the first step analysis of the respirable dust fraction is performed gravimetrically, with subsequent measurement of the concentration of quartz and cristobalite in the respirable dust fraction by infrared spectroscopy.
The method permits the determination of quartz and cristobalite concentrations in working areas averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.
Principle
A defined volume of air is drawn through a particle filter using a pump. Gravimetric determination of the respirable dust fraction is initially carried out, and then the quartz and cristobalite concentrations in the respirable dust fraction are determined by infrared spectroscopy.
Detection limit
Absolute: approx. 0.03 mg (based on experience of real dust samples of quartz and cristobalite).
Relative: 0.0013 to 0.13 mg/m3 (for a sampling duration of two hours (0.24 to 8 m3 air sample) and between 0.0003 and 0.031 mg/m3 for a sampling duration of 8 hours (0.96 to 180 m3 air sample), depending on the sampling system used.
