Translation of DGUV Information 213-545 (former BGI 505-45 or ZH1/120.45)

CAS Number: 95-80-7

Synonym: 4-Methyl-m-phenylenediamine

Method 01 – HPLC – limited suitability: category E3

Sampling with a pump and adsorption on impregnated silica gel tubes, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after desorption

This method permits the determination of 2,4-toluylenediamine concentrations in working areas averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.

Principle

With a pump a measured air volume is drawn through a sampling tube containing silica gel impregnated with hydrochloric acid. 2,4-Toluylenediamine is bound as the hydrochloride. It is eluted with an alkaline mixture of methanol and aqueous ammonia and determined analytically by HPLC.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 3 ng 2,4-toluylenediamine.

Relative: 0.02 mg/m3 2,4-toluylenediamine for 100 L air sample. This corresponds to 2 µg 2,4-toluylenediamine per sample for 3 mL elution solution and 5 µL injection volume.

Issue

October 1990

The measuring method is of limited suitability (E3).

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of 2,4-toluylenediamine (Air Monitoring Methods, Volume 4, 1999).
