Changes to the laboratory guidelines in the May 2020 version – what's new?

New chapters and amendments have been made in the online version of the laboratory guidelines "Working Safely in Laboratories – Basic principles and guidelines" (DGUV Information 213-851) as at May 2020. The respective quick references will give you an overview of the passages in which changes have been made. The affected items each appear below the corresponding heading, are cited in context and the new text is highlighted.

Chapter 4.4.1: Work clothes and protective clothing
The Chapter has been revised and accomplished.

Chapter 4.6.1: General measures
The chapter has been expanded to include the wearing of work clothes and the potential hazard of long hair.

Chapter 4.6.4: Storing work clothes and protective clothing
The chapter has been expanded to include the cleaning and disposing of contaminated work clothing.

Chapter 4.6.5: Cleaning work clothes and protective clothing
The chapter has been added to include contaminated work clothing.

Chapter 6.2.2: Escape and rescue routes
The chapter has been extended to the second escape possibility from laboratories.

Chapter 6.2.5.1: Ventilation systems
The Chapter has been revised and accomplished.

In addition, editorial changes and corrections have been made in the text and the bibliography has been updated.

All changes have also been made to the print and the online German version of the laboratory guidelines "Sicheres Arbeiten in Laboratorien – Grundlagen und Handlungshilfen" (DGUV Information 213-850).

Changes to the laboratory guidelines in the April 2017 version – what's new?

New chapters and amendments have been made in the online version of the laboratory guidelines "Working Safely in Laboratories – Basic principles and guidelines" (DGUV Information 213-851) as at April 2017. The respective quick references will give you an overview of the passages in which changes have been made. The affected items each appear below the corresponding heading, are cited in context and the new text is highlighted.

Chapter 3.4.5: Activities of persons with disabilities

NEW! Chapter 4.20.2: Lighting and emergency lighting
The chapter has been supplemented and further subdivided into two new subchapters for emergency lighting for escape routes and in working areas with particular hazards.

NEW! Chapter 5.2.27: Stirrers
Note, that agitator shafts can trap body parts and clothing.

NEW! Chapter 6.2.11: Laboratory documentation zones
Examples are given for the establishment of zones for evaluation and writing activities in laboratories in order to be able to remove the works from the experimental work area without creating long distances.

NEW! Annex 5: Criteria for expert laboratory design under consideration of occupational safety and health and environmental protection
Criteria are described in order to provide planning certainly in the construction and equipment of laboratories, based on the regulations of occupational safety.

In addition, editorial changes and corrections have been made in the text and the bibliography has been updated.

Changes to the laboratory guidelines in the March 2015 version – what's new?

Amendments have been made to individual chapters in the online version of the laboratory guidelines "Working Safely in Laboratories" (DGUV Information 213-851, previously BGI/GUV-I 850-0e) as at March 2015. The respective quick references will give you an overview of the passages in which changes have been made. The affected items each appear below the corresponding heading, are cited in context and the new text is highlighted.

Chapter 5.2.1.2: Flow conditions
Chapter 6.2.1: Operating and circulation Areas

In addition, editorial changes and corrections have been added to the text. The bibliography has been thoroughly revised and adapted to the new DGUV numbering system.

Here we inform you on changes in the Guidelines for Laboratories, which were made 2014 in the online version and 2013 in the print version. 

Changes in the Guidelines for Laboratories dated March 2014

In the online version of the Guidelines for Laboratories (“Working Safely in Laboratories”, DGUV Information 213-851) dated March 2014, the following chapters have been updated:

  • Chapter 3.6 “Substituting hazardous materials”
  • Chapter 4.5.3 "Hand protection"
  • Chapter 5.2.9.1 "Refrigerators and freezers"
  • Chapter 5.2.23 "Chromatography"

In addition, editorial changes and corrections were made in both the text and the bibliography.

The print version dated 05/2013 will receive an insert sheet that we provide as a download for the most important changes.

The printed laboratory guidelines in German ("Sicheres Arbeiten in Laboratorien", DGUV Information 213-850) in the current version are available from June 2014.

Changes in the 2013 reprint

In the reprint of DGUV Information 213-851 “Working Safely in Laboratories” dated 05/2013, the following changes were made to keep the document up to date:

  • The paragraphs of the German Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV) stated in the text were adapted to the version from 2010 – in the text reproduced from the TRGS through the addition of a corresponding passage.
  • A passage regarding the training and qualification of planners (architects, engineers) was added to the document.
  • In addition, an alteration has been made in the section on compressed-gas cylinders with regard to the latest technology.
  • Furthermore, the cited literature has been updated and the bibliography revised.

All changes have also been made in the original German version of DGUV Information 213-850 “Sicheres Arbeiten in Laboratorien” dated 04/2013.
