Analytical method for the determination of acrylonitrile

Translation of DGUV Information 213-501 (former BGI 505-01 or ZH1/120.1)

CAS-Number: 107-13-1

Synonym: Acrylic acid nitrile

Method 03 – GC – limited suitability: category E2

Sampling with a pump and adsorption on activated carbon. Gas chromatography after desorption.

This method permits the determination of acrylonitrile concentrations in work areas averaged over the sampling time after personal or stationary sampling.

Principle

A pump is used to draw a measured volume of air through an activated carbon tube. The adsorbed acrylonitrile is then desorbed using a mixture of carbon disulfide and 1-propanol (95 + 5 v/v) and determined by gas chromatography.

Limit of quantification (LOQ)

Absolute: 3 ng acrylonitrile.

Relative: 0.6 mg/m³ acrylonitrile for a 10 L air sample, 4 mL desorption solution and an injection volume of 2 µL.

Issue

March 2004

The measuring method is of limited suitability (E2).

The complete measuring method is available in the Wiley Online Library: Method for the determination of acrylonitrile (Air Monitoring Methods, Volume 10, 2007).
